Brave Rachel’s head shave in Nan’s memory

The “amazing” care given to an Island woman’s Nan during her time at Earl Mountbatten Hospice has spurred her on to have her head shaved, in aid of the hospice.

Rachel Williams, who made the brave move despite not liking short hair, decided to cut her long hair after seeing how well her Nan, Jennifer Larby, was looked after. Rachel, 22, of Blackwater, said: “I know she was happy at Earl Mountbatten Hospice, she was really looked after and staff made the time for her.”

Acknowledging how the hospice’s care extends to the whole family, Rachel added: “It wasn’t just my Nan that the hospice looked after, it was all of us! My granddad was there nearly every night, and he was given a bed to sleep on, as well as tea or coffee and dinner – he didn’t feel as if he was in the way.”

“I am not very good at having short hair and everyone who knows me, knows how much my hair means to me, but it was for an amazing charity,” Rachel said.

Rachel has so far raised nearly £700, and says it was worth doing: “I did this because my Nan was everything, and I miss her so much.”

Nigel Hartley, Chief Executive, said: “This was indeed a brave thing for Rachel to do, and we are so grateful that she did it in support of our hospice. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to support people and their families, whether that is on our hospice ward, out in the community, in our day centre or even at St Mary’s Hospital. I am sorry to hear of Rachel’s loss, but hope that the support we were able to give to her family helped to make a very difficult time a little more bearable.”
